What are the Two Types of Plumber in Australia?

Plumbers in Malabar are either registered or licensed. Registered plumbers completed a plumbing apprenticeship and classroom learnings under the Certificate III in Plumbing program. They can carry out basic plumbing works related to drain-vents and water supply. Licensed plumbers have higher knowledge and experience than registered plumbers. These types of plumbers have completed several years of practical experience and passed the Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services. They are also required to get consumer insurance protection against defective plumbing works. A licensed plumber can:

  • Supervise apprenticeship and registered plumbers
  • Carry out plumbing design works
  • Issue plumbing compliance certificates

How to Become a Plumber in Australia?

There are different plumbing courses one must complete as a first step to become a plumber in Australia. The main courses cover:

  • Drainage
  • Fire Protection
  • Gas Fitting
  • Mechanical Services
  • Non-Agricultural Irrigation
  • Refrigerated Air- Conditioning
  • Sanitary
  • Stormwater Roofing
  • Water supply

Both licensed and registered plumbers in Malabar must complete the main courses listed above. After completing the courses, you should find a licensed plumbing practitioner and apply for an apprenticeship. During an apprenticeship program, you’ll learn the skills, technologies, and tools on the:

  • Installation and maintenance of air conditioning units and water heaters
  • Installation of fixtures like sinks and showerheads

After completing the apprenticeship and learning programs, you can then apply for a Certificate III in Plumbing.

You are then eligible to pursue a Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services. To become a licensed plumber, one must complete the following specialised courses:

  • Backflow Prevention
  • Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV)
  • Type A Appliance Conversions
  • Type A Appliance Servicing
  • Type B Gas Fitting Works (Basics)
  • Type B Gas Fitting Works (Advanced)

Plumbers will gain practical experience within these specialised courses from around 6 months to 2 years. Once completed, you will need to pass a certification exam and secure the right amount of insurance you’ll need to become a licensed plumber.

Licensed plumbers  can advance their careers to become a master plumber. This is to uplift one’s reputation among customers and within the plumbing community. There are many opportunities to level up your plumbing skills and carry out complex plumbing tasks. The more qualifications plumbers have, the better prospects they’ll gain within the community.
